Each day of Brahma, a kalpa lasting 4.32 billion years, is followed by a night of equal length, during which the manifest universe dissolves back into an unmanifest state. This is not described as annihilation in the sense of things ceasing to exist without remainder. The tradition is specific about what persists through the night and what does not, and the distinction maps directly onto the maya framework developed earlier in this series.
What dissolves is form: the fourteen lokas, embodied beings, the specific configuration of matter that constituted the previous cycle’s universe. What is said to persist is the causal potential for that configuration to reappear, along with the accumulated karmic residue of beings who have not yet achieved liberation, carried forward in seed form rather than active expression. Brahma himself is described as withdrawing into a kind of cosmic sleep for the night’s duration, to awaken and begin creating again once it ends, working from that same carried-forward potential rather than starting from nothing.
This is the cosmological-scale version of a pattern this series has traced at smaller scales throughout: dissolution as a return to source rather than erasure, consistent with the earlier account of why dissolution is not destruction. What differs at the scale of a full kalpa is simply the size of what is being returned: not an individual life or a single cycle of the seasons, but an entire universe, folded back into potential for a night lasting billions of years, before unfolding again in a new day differing from the last mainly in the specific beings who populate it, not in the underlying structure governing how it will unfold.
