They cognize the Vedic knowledge fresh for each era, transmit it to the new humanity, and hold the thread of wisdom across the dissolution between cycles. They are the universe’s memory.
History
The concept of the Saptarishis — Seven Great Seers — is one of the most ancient and continuous in the Vedic tradition. They are simultaneously historical figures (revered teachers of vast antiquity), cosmic principles (the seven rays of the Absolute expressing through consciousness), astronomical markers (identified with the seven bright stars of Ursa Major), and temporal markers (each Manvantara has its own Saptarishis, allowing the tradition to track cosmic time through seer-lineage). The Saptarishis of the first Manvantara — Svayambhuva — were: Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and Vashistha. Manu Vaivasvata — the progenitor of the current human lineage — is the Vedic equivalent of Noah: he survived the great flood that ended the previous Manvantara (through Matsya avatar's guidance) and established the human civilization of the current era.
