History
The Rigveda's Hiranyagarbha Sukta (10.121) is one of the most extraordinary cosmological texts ever composed. It asks, repeatedly, "kasmai devāya havishā vidhema?" — "To which god shall we offer?" — meaning: before the gods were born, before the cosmos took form, there was this: Hiranyagarbha. Not a story to explain thunder or harvest — a precise philosophical statement about the first principle of existence. The Rishis understood that creation required a seed — not material, but informational — from which all structure could unfold.

Hiranyagarbha = the Information Field. Before matter, there is information. The universe is a thought in the cosmic mind before it is a physical event. This maps onto physicist John Wheeler's "It from Bit" — the universe is fundamentally informational, not material. Every physical thing is grounded in a prior informational structure. Hiranyagarbha is the first bit — the first distinction in an undifferentiated field. Shannon's information theory: information arises only when a distinction is made. Hiranyagarbha is the first distinction. All subsequent reality is elaboration.
Bio
The moment of the Big Bang — not an explosion in space, but the beginning of space itself. In the Planck epoch (the first 10⁻⁴³ seconds), all four fundamental forces were unified. As the universe expanded and cooled, they differentiated — just as Hiranyagarbha differentiates from Brahman. All the information for 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution was encoded in this first instant. The Hiranyagarbha principle: the seed contains the entire tree.
Neuro
The moment of waking from dreamless sleep — pure consciousness stirring into self-awareness. The "I am" arising before the "I am this." Neuroscientists call this "minimal phenomenal consciousness" — the bare experience of being aware, before sensory content loads. This is the neurological parallel to Hiranyagarbha: the first flicker of awareness before the world of objects populates it.
Quantum
Wave function at maximum superposition — before the first collapse. Maximum possibility, zero actualization. Hiranyagarbha is the quantum state before the first observation: all paths exist simultaneously, the universe hasn't chosen any particular trajectory yet. The Planck scale — where quantum gravity effects dominate — is the physical correlate: space-time itself hasn't formed, geometry hasn't stabilized, only probability distributions exist.

The moment between breaths. Between thoughts. The gap that the Vedas say contains all the knowledge of the universe. In Yoga Nidra, practitioners report touching a state of pure awareness that is both completely awake and completely dissolved of content. This is the Hiranyagarbha state: not Brahman (which has no self-awareness) and not the individuated ego (which has too much) — but the first, pure "I Am" that is aware of itself without yet being aware of anything else.
