The universe does not exist inside Brahman the way water is inside a cup — it appears as Brahman the way waves appear as the ocean.
History
In the beginning was Brahman alone — "Ekam eva advitiyam." One alone, without a second. The Rigveda's Nasadiya Sukta (10.129) asks: "Who really knows? Who will here proclaim it? Whence was it produced? Whence is this creation? The gods came afterwards, with the creation of this universe." Not even the gods knew the origin — because the origin is before all knowing. The Upanishads do not describe this as a story; they describe it as a direct experience. The Rishis who composed these verses were not mythologizing — they were reporting what was perceived in the deepest states of meditation.

Brahman maps precisely onto the Unified Field theory in physics — the hypothesis that all four fundamental forces (gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces) are expressions of one underlying field. But the Vedic parallel goes deeper: Brahman is not merely an energetic field. It is a conscious field. Physicists describe the quantum vacuum as seething with zero-point energy — virtual particles constantly appearing and dissolving, with an energy density of approximately 10¹¹³ joules per cubic meter. This is the closest physics has come to describing Brahman: a ground state that appears empty but contains infinite potential.
Bio
Before the first amino acid. Before the first star ignited. Before the Big Bang itself. Modern physics describes a pre-inflationary state where the laws of physics as we know them did not yet apply — a state of pure mathematical potential. The Vedic concept of Brahman describes exactly this: a state so fundamental that even time, causality, and identity are appearances within it. Every living organism that has ever existed is Brahman appearing in biological form — the way the ocean appears as individual waves without ever ceasing to be the ocean.
Neuro
Modern neuroscience has identified what it calls the "default mode network" (DMN) — a set of brain regions that activate during rest and deactivate during focused task performance. In deep meditation, experienced practitioners show a dramatic reduction in DMN activity. What remains when the self-referential narrative of the DMN goes quiet is what the Vedas point to as Brahman — pure awareness without content. The brain is not generating consciousness; it is filtering it. Remove the filter, and what you find is the baseline: Brahman.
Quantum
The quantum vacuum is the ground state of all quantum fields — it is not empty but a seething ocean of virtual particles in superposition. Zero-point energy means that even at absolute zero temperature, quantum fields retain residual energy. Maximum coherence, maximum potential — no wave function has collapsed yet. This is the quantum description of Brahman: infinite potential, no actualization, complete undifferentiated coherence. The moment of the first quantum fluctuation is the moment Brahman "stirs" — what the Vedas call Spanda, the primal pulse.
Inner
You have touched Brahman in dreamless sleep — the state of complete rest where even the dreamer disappears. The Māndūkya Upanishad calls this "Prajña" — the third state, characterized by bliss and the absence of the experiencer. Meditation is learning to know this state while awake. The silence before the inner monologue begins, the gap between two thoughts — these are the moments when Brahman is most directly accessible. Not because Brahman "arrives" in the gap — but because the noise has stopped and you can finally hear what was always there.

Time itself is an appearance within Brahman. The question "what was before Brahman?" is like asking "what is north of the North Pole?" — the question assumes a frame that doesn't exist outside of Brahman. Causality, sequence, before-and-after — these are all features of the Brahman-dream. Outside the dream, only Brahman. Before the dream, only Brahman. During the dream, still only Brahman.
